Galata Tower

Considered among the oldest towers in the world and one of the symbols of Istanbul.

The stone tower was built by the Genoese in 1348, at the highest point of the walls that once enclosed their Galata colony. Over the centuries it served as a watchtower, a prison and a fire lookout, and its conical roof has been rebuilt more than once.

Today the tower is a museum. Its observation balcony offers a full circle view over the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus and the historic peninsula, and the small square at its foot is one of the liveliest corners of Galata.
